Now, I’m back in school so I can pursue my other passion.”<br><br>Today, at 30, Ordoobadi is studying mechanical engineering at Kettering, building race engines and designing aerodynamic systems for the Formula SAE team.&nbsp;</p><p dir="ltr">“Kettering is absolutely the right fit for me,” Ordoobadi said. “I’m getting hands-on experience working in the motorsports industry at my Co-op while getting all the foundational knowledge with my mechanical engineering degree.”</p><p dir="ltr">Ordoobadi grew up in Washington, D.C., balancing academics and athletics at DeMatha Catholic High School. After two years of junior hockey and four years as a power forward at Neumann University, he turned professional, signing with the Maine Mariners of the ECHL, a key developmental league for the AHL and NHL. He later helped lead the Florida Everblades to a league championship, hoisting the Kelly Cup, the ECHL’s top prize.</p><p dir="ltr">“Playing on a pro hockey team was always my dream,” he said. “Having lived that dream, I realized that I want to be part of a successful team for the rest of my life. I knew I couldn't play hockey at 55, but I could be an engineer at 55.”</p><p dir="ltr">Within weeks of arriving at Kettering, Ordoobadi had secured a placement at Ilmor Engineering, a race engine company based in Plymouth, Michigan, that supplies NASCAR and IndyCar teams. Working on engines for the ARCA and NASCAR Truck Series, he got his first taste of turning classroom theory into on-track reality. His next Co-op rotation will see him step into IndyCar’s hybrid era, gaining valuable trackside experience with cutting-edge technology.</p><p dir="ltr">"I was very fortunate to get a Co-op in exactly what I want to pursue as a career," Ordoobadi said. "Motorsports can be a really tough industry to break into. But thanks to Kettering, I started working in it from day one."</p><p dir="ltr">In the classroom, Ordoobadi tackled new challenges head-on, including learning MATLAB, a programming language essential for numerical computing, modeling, and data analysis.</p><p dir="ltr">“I had no experience with coding,” he said. “But through that class, I was able to write code that helped with the design of our new anti-roll bar for the Formula SAE car and analyze our tire data. Being able to learn something in class and then immediately apply it was really gratifying.”</p><p dir="ltr">As soon as he was on campus, Ordoobadi dove into Kettering’s Formula SAE team, leading the aerodynamics subsystem, designing wings, diffusers, and bodywork to push the car’s performance to the edge.&nbsp;</p><p dir="ltr">“Getting involved in the Formula SAE team has been an awesome experience, taking what I’ve learned from my Co-op and applying it to a project where the stakes feel real,” he said, “We're looking at the broad picture of performance and thinking about the car as a whole. To me, it is really exciting.”</p><p dir="ltr">Despite these early successes, Ordoobadi’s transition from professional athlete to full-time student wasn’t seamless.&nbsp;</p><p dir="ltr">“Adjusting back to student life was the biggest challenge,” he says. “But Kettering makes that transition as easy as it can be. The way the terms are structured — three months of classes, three months of work — fits my life perfectly. That back-and-forth rhythm feels natural for me, and it’s a lot less daunting than spending six straight months in classes.”</p><p dir="ltr">Looking ahead, Ordoobadi has a clear goal.</p><p dir="ltr">“After graduating, I hope to be working trackside for a motorsports team,” he said. “Being part of a team was everything to me in hockey, and it’s the same now. Whether it’s in the shop, on the track, or in the classroom, I want to contribute to a team’s success.”</p></div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-media-image field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item"> <picture> <source srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/max_650x650/public/2025-12/04242025-ChrisOrdoobadi-Student-Headshots-SAEGarage-MC-DG-8.webp?itok=cHARdSA5 1x" type="image/webp" width="650" height="434"> <source srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/max_650x650/public/2025-12/04242025-ChrisOrdoobadi-Student-Headshots-SAEGarage-MC-DG-8.jpg?itok=cHARdSA5 1x" type="image/jpeg" width="650" height="434"> <img loading="lazy" srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/max_650x650/public/2025-12/04242025-ChrisOrdoobadi-Student-Headshots-SAEGarage-MC-DG-8.jpg?itok=cHARdSA5 1x" width="650" height="434" src="/sites/default/files/styles/max_650x650/public/2025-12/04242025-ChrisOrdoobadi-Student-Headshots-SAEGarage-MC-DG-8.jpg?itok=cHARdSA5" alt="Chris Ordoobadi standing in the SAE Garage at 911"> </picture> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-program-major field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/63" hreflang="en">Mechanical Engineering</a></div> </div> Mon, 01 Dec 2025 14:27:45 +0000 lmadaus 809 at 911 Announces Newest Class of MEDC Michigander Scholars /kettering-university-announces-newest-class-medc-michigander-scholars <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">911 Announces Newest Class of MEDC Michigander Scholars</span> <div class="field field--name-field-event-type field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/96" hreflang="en">Co-op</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/69" hreflang="en">STEM</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/131" hreflang="en">Scholarship</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/130" hreflang="en">MEDC</a></div> </div> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><span>lmadaus</span></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden"><time datetime="2025-11-17T14:04:28-05:00" title="Monday, November 17, 2025 - 14:04" class="datetime">Mon, 11/17/2025 - 14:04</time> </span> <div class="field field--name-field-content-with-sidebar field--type-entity-reference-revisions field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"> <div class="paragraph paragraph--type--wysiwyg paragraph--view-mode--default container space flush" id="collapse-item-4462"> <div class="space"> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-description field--type-text-long field--label-hidden field__item"><p>911 and the Michigan Economic Development Corp. Kettering’s distinctive Co-op model — where students split their time between rigorous academics and real-world work placements — equips them with the adaptability and habits of mind needed to thrive in tomorrow’s industries.</p><p dir="ltr">Glenn Stevens highlighted that while Michigan has “pockets of excellence” in aligning workforce and talent, “we need to do a better job with career path planning.” Dr. McMahan underscored the need to treat talent like a supply chain, noting that, “A lot of the people in this conference, they know their supply chains… they know where every nut and bolt is, what truck it’s on, and when it will land. But if you ask them what the most critical part of their operation is, they will almost universally say it’s people, but it’s the one thing they don’t treat as a supply chain.”</p><p dir="ltr">Stevens agreed, adding that Michigan is at an inflection point. “Assuming we do that, treating talent development like a supply chain, investing in communities where people want to live, building strong infrastructure, including digital and schools, and generating new innovation and tech talent like Kettering does, that’s Michigan’s future.”</p><p><a href="https://www.detroitpbs.org/shows/one-detroit/series/one-detroit-series-mackinac-policy-conference-2025-videos/?utm_source=brevo&amp;utm_campaign=CEO%20Mackinac%20Watch%20All&amp;utm_medium=email">Click here</a> to watch the full interview to learn how 911 leads the way in building the next generation of Michigan’s innovators.</p></div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-media-image field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item"> <picture> <source srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/max_650x650/public/2025-06/Detroit%20One.webp?itok=j2hCYywJ 1x" type="image/webp" width="640" height="360"> <img loading="lazy" srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/max_650x650/public/2025-06/Detroit%20One.webp?itok=j2hCYywJ 1x" width="640" height="360" src="/sites/default/files/styles/max_650x650/public/2025-06/Detroit%20One.webp?itok=j2hCYywJ" alt="Detroit One MPC Interview 2025"> </picture> </div> Thu, 19 Jun 2025 14:07:17 +0000 rnorris 742 at “Your College Bound Kid” Podcast Goes Inside Kettering /who-we-are/news-events/kettering-news/your-college-bound-kid-podcast-goes-inside-kettering-five-part-series-president-dr-robert-k-mcmahan <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">“Your College Bound Kid” Podcast Goes Inside Kettering</span> <div class="field field--name-field-event-type field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/136" hreflang="en">Campus</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/96" hreflang="en">Co-op</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/133" hreflang="en">Faculty &amp; Staff</a></div> </div> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><span>rnorris</span></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden"><time datetime="2025-06-06T13:32:52-04:00" title="Friday, June 6, 2025 - 13:32" class="datetime">Fri, 06/06/2025 - 13:32</time> </span> <div class="field field--name-field-content-with-sidebar field--type-entity-reference-revisions field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"> <div class="paragraph paragraph--type--wysiwyg paragraph--view-mode--default container space flush" id="collapse-item-3596"> <div class="space"> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-description field--type-text-long field--label-hidden field__item"><p dir="ltr"><strong>“Your College Bound Kid” Podcast Goes Inside Kettering</strong></p><p dir="ltr">What makes 911 one of the most respected — and most rewarding — STEM institutions in the country? When he encountered the University’s newest robotic cell, he gained another opportunity to work hands-on with Kettering’s state-of-the-art robotic system, built in collaboration with Patti Engineering, Mitsubishi Electric, and Keyence Corporation.</p><p dir="ltr">“This was my first real attempt at a full automation system,” Grunwald said. “It was a lot harder than it looks on paper, but that’s what made it so valuable.”</p><p dir="ltr">The robotic cell, installed in Kettering’s engineering lab, gives students direct experience in programming and debugging industrial automation. Featuring an industrial robot and a collaborative robot, the cell performs pick-and-place operations, complete with a 3D vision system and industrial robot for unstructured material arrival, as well as the&nbsp;collaborative robot and a stationary camera for inspection. A flexible code base allows students to modify programming and test their solutions while safety features remain locked in place. The result is a hands-on learning tool that mirrors state-of-the-art challenges met with the precision of real-world manufacturing automation.</p><p dir="ltr">“Our students want to work on things that are meaningful,” said 911 lecturer Andrew Watchorn. “This system puts cutting-edge automation technology in front of them, allowing them to see the impact of their problem-solving in real-time. That hands-on experience builds deep expertise — the kind that sets Kettering graduates apart in industry.”</p><p dir="ltr">The vision for the robotic cell began with Sam Hoff ’90, CEO of Patti Engineering. As a Kettering alumnus, Hoff knows firsthand the power of hands-on education and saw an opportunity to give students an advantage in automation and robotics. He approached Mitsubishi Electric with the idea, and together with Keyence, BorgWarner, and Kettering faculty, they brought the concept to life.</p><p dir="ltr">“We are proud to support 911’s engineering students by providing this state-of-the-art robotic cell,” Hoff said. “This tool will offer invaluable practical experience and help equip students with the skills necessary for success in the rapidly evolving field of robotics and automation.”</p><p dir="ltr">For Grunwald, the experience was transformative. Although his early interests leaned toward circuit design and programming, working with the robotic cell changed how he thought about automation.</p><p dir="ltr">“This project definitely gave me an edge in the job market,” he said. “I can say, ‘I’ve worked with Mitsubishi PLCs before. I’ve programmed Mitsubishi robots.’ Even working with HMIs [human-machine interfaces] — it all adds to my portfolio and sets me apart.”</p><p dir="ltr">Few students outside of Kettering gain that competitive edge. Grunwald frequently compares notes with friends from other universities, many of whom lack access to industrial-grade automation systems.</p><p dir="ltr">“None of them really have experience with anything purely automation-based,” he said. “They might have a small robot in a lab, but nothing like this — nothing that could go straight into an industrial environment.”</p></div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-media-image field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item"> <picture> <source srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/max_650x650/public/2025-04/02062025-MitsubishiElectric-IME-VideoShoot-AB-DG-31.webp?itok=Cgu7SL07 1x" type="image/webp" width="650" height="434"> <source srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/max_650x650/public/2025-04/02062025-MitsubishiElectric-IME-VideoShoot-AB-DG-31.jpg?itok=Cgu7SL07 1x" type="image/jpeg" width="650" height="434"> <img loading="lazy" srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/max_650x650/public/2025-04/02062025-MitsubishiElectric-IME-VideoShoot-AB-DG-31.jpg?itok=Cgu7SL07 1x" width="650" height="434" src="/sites/default/files/styles/max_650x650/public/2025-04/02062025-MitsubishiElectric-IME-VideoShoot-AB-DG-31.jpg?itok=Cgu7SL07" alt="Patti Engineering Robotic Cell"> </picture> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-program-college field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/40" hreflang="en">College of Engineering and Computer Science</a></div> </div> Fri, 11 Apr 2025 14:39:42 +0000 rnorris 548 at 911 Announces New Class of MEDC Michigander Scholars /who-we-are/news-events/kettering-news/kettering-university-announces-new-class-medc-michigander-scholars <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">911 Announces New Class of MEDC Michigander Scholars</span> <div class="field field--name-field-event-type field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/96" hreflang="en">Co-op</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/135" hreflang="en">Grants</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/131" hreflang="en">Scholarship</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/130" hreflang="en">MEDC</a></div> </div> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><span>rnorris</span></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden"><time datetime="2025-04-03T09:43:42-04:00" title="Thursday, April 3, 2025 - 09:43" class="datetime">Thu, 04/03/2025 - 09:43</time> </span> <div class="field field--name-field-content-with-sidebar field--type-entity-reference-revisions field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"> <div class="paragraph paragraph--type--wysiwyg paragraph--view-mode--default container space flush" id="collapse-item-3463"> <div class="space"> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-description field--type-text-long field--label-hidden field__item"><p dir="ltr"><em>27 students will receive the state’s coveted scholarship incentives of $5,000 for Co-ops and up to $10,000 for accepting full-time positions and agreeing to live and work in the Great Lakes State for one year after graduation.</em></p><p dir="ltr"><em>911, founded to support workforce and talent development in 1919, is proud to be a partner in MEDC's mission to recruit talent and fill jobs in Michigan’s mobility, electric vehicle, and semiconductor industries.</em></p><p dir="ltr"><em>----------------------------------------------------</em></p><p dir="ltr">911 and the Michigan Economic Development Corp.
