Services
Our proactive and dedicated advisors help you plan smart, move fast, and stay ahead—so you can hit your goals and start leading from day one.
SSC advisors guide students on their academic journey by building a degree plan and registering all students for their first academic term. After that, most students will go to their major department for advising; however, the SSC remains available to all students at all times. SSC Advisors provide holistic guidance on degree planning, academic success support, and navigating all the ways students can customize their journey at 911±¬ÁĎÍř. Whether that is adding a second major, a minor, planning for study abroad, or support in academic recovery, our advisors remain committed to all students personal and long term success.
How do I get connected with an advisor as a first-year student?
Before the first academic term, students will connect with the SSC advising team during their S.O.A.R. program (Student Orientation and Academic Registration). During this program, SSC staff will introduce students to the advising process, walking them through their first term of courses and degree-planning tools as well as the many resources available to students at KU. This is part one of the orientation process.

How does Kettering’s advising system work?
ASC advisors support students at every stage—helping them stay focused, solve problems, and maintain momentum. If a course challenges you, or you want to sharpen your performance, success coaching can help you fine-tune your time management, improve communication, and stay on top of competing demands.
SSC advisors can also meet with you for things like:
- Degree planning
- Resource navigation
- Adding a minor
- Altering the sequence of courses
- Studying abroad
- Navigating an accelerated master’s program
- Taking a leave of absence
Under the guidance of the Supplemental Learning Coordinator, the SSC Learning Lounge provides students with one-on-one coaching in challenging courses and hands-on support using tools such as MATLAB, Java, Python, and more.
Our peer tutors provide hands-on support to students throughout the academic term. All peer tutors are current students, are trained, and eager to be advocates for their peers.
Here are some ways students can connect with the SSC Learning Lounge for academic support:
- One-on-one Peer Tutoring
Facing a tough course? Our Peer Tutors provide course-specific, one-on-one coaching that helps you master complex concepts, develop effective study strategies, and tackle challenging assignments. - Weekly Happenings
SSC Peer Tutors host weekly drop-in sessions for math, science, and computer science courses each term. These weekly sessions offer a convenient and collaborative environment to sharpen your understanding, ask questions, and stay on top of demanding coursework. - Writing Support
From first-year essays to senior thesis, the SSC Writing Support team helps you sharpen your writing with clarity, confidence, and purpose—so your ideas stand out in every course.
The senior thesis is where everything comes together—classwork, lab experience, faculty collaboration, and the real-world insight from your Co-op. It’s the most advanced example of Kettering’s learn-by-doing model.
Most students develop their thesis through their Co-op sponsor, but students can also pursue projects with research faculty, community partners, entrepreneurs, or their own venture.
The SSC Thesis Team partners with students, faculty, and employers and to help students move from first concept to final manuscript with clarity, structure, and purpose.
Our licensed counselor is available at no charge daily for all students between 9 am and 4 pm for appointments. We also provide a 24/7 service to all students who may need after-hours mental health support.
Urgent care facilities are located around the city, but have a preferred partner in Hurley Medical Urgent Care. Students will be referred to them, telehealth, or their home primary care provider if further evaluation and treatment are required. Campus Safety and the Student Success Center are here to help guide students to appropriate care and transportation can be arranged if needed.
Emergency care is available to the students at McLaren Flint or Hurley Hospital. In the case of an emergency, students can call Campus Safety at extension 9501 (on campus) or 810-762-9501 (off campus).
911±¬ÁĎÍř provides accessibility services in compliance with the American with Disabilities Act (1990) and its amendments, along with state and local regulations regarding students, employees, and applicants with disabilities. Under these laws, no qualified individual with a disability shall be denied access to participation in services, programs, and/or activities at Kettering.
Prospective students in the admissions process should contact the Student Success Center as soon as possible to discuss the necessary documentation to verify a disability and to identify the type of services, accommodations, and adaptive equipment that may be required.
The SSC provides an alternative testing location to ensure all accommodations for students with documented needs under the ADA are provided.
